AFRICAN
REPARATIONS FUND
Moyo
wa Africa is opposed to the notion of charity, and consciously
recognizes that any resources that flow from ‘the West’ (European
societies) to
Africa
or Africans must be considered long-overdue reparations for centuries of
destruction and plunder by European powers. The African Reparations
Fund is the branch of MWA that collects resources and redistributes
them to people and projects that use an Indigenist or decolonization
framework to tackle the legacies of colonization, such as poverty, Aids,
and war. Organizations with an Indigenist or decolonization framework
are rooted in Indigenous
African spiritualities, knowledge systems,
and economic praxis, and use these as a basis for rebuilding healthy,
self-sustaining and sustainable societies. In addition to being
Indigenist, the initiatives selected are those which incorporate
anti-oppression principles to protect the interests of women, children,
queer people, people with disabilities, and all people disadvantaged by
societal inequities. To receive funding these initiatives must genuinely
and substantially improve the lives of the community/ies in which they
operate in the long-term. The suitability and success of projects funded
is assessed collectively by the community and by members of
MWA. To receive funding an organization or project must first
become part of our network and then the ARF or the organization can
initiate a conversation on the possibility of funding.
