Organizational History

MWA previously used the name African Council at Trent and operated out of Peterborough, Ontario. ACT was formed for the purpose of building a community of African students at Trent who were committed to fighting racism, educating the public about African issues, and financially supporting grassroots initiatives for community well-being in Africa . We operated from 2003 to 2005. Achievements include:

-          Held events that raised funds for Kwari Village home for Children Orphaned by Aids in Zimbabwe

-          Co-hosted (with the Society of Friends) a successful conference entitled Grassroots Africa: African Grassroots Initiatives for Community Wellbeing which raised awareness about work done in Africa by Africans to battle poverty and injustice

-          Worked with Canada Africa Partnership on AIDS to hold the Bike to CAP Aids bike-a-thon in Peterborough . Funds raised were used to supply bicycles to Aids workers in rural areas.

-          Locally we established a community and a support network for Black students interested in  African issues and addressed racism at Trent and in Peterborough

-          Held public film-showings of The Origin of Aids, A CBC documentary about the role of the polio vaccination trials in the spread of Aids. The film-shows were followed by discussion session aimed at brainstorming potential action plans to address the epidemic and the politics behind it.

-          Held an Aids Awareness Week at Trent .

-          Organized the Decolonization Dinner and Dance event to address the legacy of colonization in Africa . This event also raised funds for Kwari Village .
