Organizational
History
MWA
previously used the name African Council at Trent and operated
out of
Peterborough,
Ontario. ACT was formed for the purpose
of building a community of African students at Trent
who were committed to fighting racism, educating the public about
African issues, and financially supporting grassroots initiatives for
community well-being in
Africa
. We operated from 2003 to 2005. Achievements include:

Held
events that raised funds for
Kwari
Village
home for Children Orphaned by Aids in
Zimbabwe
-
Co-hosted
(with the Society of Friends) a successful conference entitled Grassroots
Africa: African Grassroots Initiatives for Community Wellbeing which
raised awareness about work done in
Africa
by Africans to battle poverty and injustice

Worked
with Canada Africa Partnership on AIDS to hold the Bike to CAP
Aids bike-a-thon in
Peterborough
. Funds raised were used to supply bicycles to Aids workers in rural
areas.

Locally
we established a community and a support network for Black students
interested in African issues
and addressed racism at
Trent
and in
Peterborough
-
Held
public film-showings of The Origin of Aids, A CBC documentary
about the role of the polio vaccination trials in the spread of Aids.
The film-shows were followed by discussion session aimed at
brainstorming potential action plans to address the epidemic and the
politics behind it.

Held
an Aids Awareness Week at Trent

Organized
the Decolonization Dinner and Dance event to address the legacy
of colonization in
Africa
. This event also raised funds for
Kwari
Village
.
